Rather not.\nHe likes to keep his business and private life separate.         <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Where is the connection?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Mahmoud likes to build rapport before talking about business and before negotiating higher prices.\nIn his we-world, doing business can be likened to granting benefits to each other.\nSuch favor tends to increase when you know each other better.    <\/p>\n\n<p>In Joost&#8217;s I world, work has nothing to do with personal relationships.\nIt is about a business transaction between two parties.\nJoost finds Mahmoud a bit pushy.\nMahmoud is relationship-oriented and Joost is task-oriented.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Moreover, the price increase will not depend on the personal relationship.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s all about the business facts.\nThe quantity you buy, the payment behavior and so on. <\/p>\n\n<p>Mahmoud can just address him, directly, about the price pressure.\nWhat also comes into play is that Joost is a customer, and there is a power relationship.\nMahmoud will also be more sensitive to that.\nIn the Netherlands, you are much less concerned with that.   <\/p>\n\n<p>He can take that task-focused Joost into account, by not offering a Turkish coffee this time, but giving Joost a box of Turkish dates.\nFor Joost&#8217;s wife.\nAnd asking if Joost will continue to have a coffee with him next Tuesday.\nAnd the balance of power?\nAt least Mahmoud has the advantage of being a lot older, so that lifts the power differential somewhat.    <\/p>\n\n<p>So just saying that current prices will have to go up.\nWith some substantiation.\nInflation, exchange rates.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t beat around the bush for too long.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In short<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>For Joost:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accept that Mahmoud comes from a we-society.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relationships, giving and receiving hospitality are very important.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mahmoud also comes from a hierarchical society.\nIt is normal for the customer to exercise power. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be extra alert to the other person&#8217;s body language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mahmoud probably wants to discuss more than private matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>For Mahmoud:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accept that Holland has a distinctly I culture and therefore say what is on their mind&#8230;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holland is egalitarian, so customer and supplier are also equal.\nThe same goes for age, Mahmoud is not more powerful because of that. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try answering directly, without loose ends.\nThe Dutch are used to being addressed directly. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/connect2us.eu\/en\/the-social-dilemmas-in-our-society\/\">Want to read more about culture dimensions?<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-belangrijk-om-te-weten\"><strong>Important to know<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>This anecdote is based on stories shared with us.\nConnect2Us strives to highlight the dilemma from both sides and not to label people or suggest that one or the other should behave differently.\nWe see in our daily intercultural work that awareness by those involved is enough to move toward each other without pretending to be very different.
